Well, this is not the first one we have had this summer, it started in late spring, sigh. But it continues on with a week of break here and there. Glad the Europeans who came to the FIFA games understand why we have air conditioning and I’m very glad we do!!! Church tomorrow should be interesting, I always bring a cloth fan because sometimes it’s still warm even with the air conditioning on, so I should be fine, I’ll just be fanning away :). We use to have mall alerts when it was got up into the 90’s (before that big inside mall closed) so the elderly and mothers to be or mothers with children and no air conditioning could go sit at the mall until evening when it cooled down a bit. If Willis Carrier, who invented the air conditioner in 1902, was still alive, I’d give him a big hug! Fall weather is only a couple of months to come because with an El Niño weather pattern, we could have summer into or through September, sigh. Everyone who is in this heat wave, please stay safe.

With the heat wave in Europe, seems it didn’t take too long for FIFA players to stop complaining about playing in the US summer. It would have been sooo much worse if the Cup had been played in Europe with their no AC. Our local weatherman also showed how the amount of rain falling per minute has increased over the past 50 years leading to roadway and house flooding since our much older sewer system was not designed for that amount of rain that fast.

Kinda made me chuckle that they thought the water breaks were because we couldn’t handle the heat :P. They went home with much more appreciation of the air conditioning in our sometimes very humid heat! Yeah the south in the USA is having tropical storms hit the gulf area and they flood pretty bad too :(. My heart is breaking tho for the higher death rate over all this heat in Europe :(. Do they not have air conditioners because it’s frowned on by the government or they can’t afford them? Window units aren’t very expensive and one can cool a couple of rooms down to stay cool in, using less electricity than a big unit. Surely they would want to help out the elderly and very young in the heat? In IA when we had our big indoor malls open they would send out an alert to the those without air conditioning to go to the mall for relief. I just have a window air conditioner unit (uses less electricity for my energy bill) but cools down my kitchen, and living room and just stay in the living room. I have a small apt, It’s comfortable at 72 to 74 degrees, plus I have fans going to move the air around. Hope you are staying safe!!

European energy costs are 2-3X more expensive than the US. Plus France, Germany, and the UK are actually parallel to northern Canada. Parts of Sweden, Norway, and Finland are actually in the Artic Circle!! Hence their summers usually are a lot cooler than ours. Throw in a lot of the buildings are “historical” making it nearly impossible to upgrade them for AC. I suspect window units would be heavily frowned on. Also what the UK calls a “house”, we would call it a townhouse or condo. Stand alone houses are uncommon. It’s something to consider if you travel to Europe in the summer. I went to Italy with my daughter about 15 years ago and the hotel did not have AC. We also rented a VRBO in Madrid about 10 years ago and it had no AC.

I was born in Germany (dad was in the Air Force), tho I was still an infant when we left and I was in 6th and part of 7th grade when I was in Japan and part of 7th, 8th & part of 9th in the Philippines so we had on base housing and I don’t remember a ton about the heat (tho the Philippines had typhoons :P), tho I don’t think they had air conditioning either, we played outside mostly 😛 (those 2 countries were a great experience), and I’m pretty sure tho that the schools didn’t have AC either. After being an Air Force brat for a long time and moving so much (every 3 years), I really have no desire to travel overseas again. We are pretty spoiled here :P.
