Halloween at the Farm, Alpaca spin Turned into Hat and New Hats for Warmth Start

This was the Halloween celebration at the farm this past Saturday :). The first two pictures are some of his decorations, then there are several pictures of the alpacas wearing costumes, lol, some of them had trouble leaving them on! You can see the male behind the fence with a bow tie and little Apollo also has a tie on, some of the females were wearing hats. Libby the llama said, nope! They will be decked out at Christmas too :).

The next to the last picture is some sport weight hand spun I turned into a hat for my friend that gave me the smaller wheel that I use at the farm during alpaca days to show spinning to the people who come out to enjoy the alpacas as a thank you. It’s a paid for pattern, Husband Request Hat on Ravelry. I changed it a little so I made it a little longer and knit 4 purl 2 so it’s a little more stretchy, but I wasn’t sure of his head measurements and I am not a fan of the hats that fit skin tight so I thought this was the best way to go. Hope it fits him :P.

The last picture is the new hat I’m working on with the Hats for Warmth project I work on for our local homeless shelter. This will be hat number 5 this year, one more after this and I will send them off to the shelter. I am using a #6 16″ circular needle and I Love This Yarn in the print color #red tweed. It’s not really a tweed, it’s a darker red with black speckles on it, LOL, but it is pretty. I am enjoying knitting it.

  1. OMG, how ADORABLE are those alpacas in their costumes!!!! Love it!!!!! It sounds like the farm is all in for the holidays, that’s awesome they are so open to the community, too!

Love the hat(s)! It’s so wonderful you are so plugged in to the service, we all need more service in our lives – me especially!

    • I enjoy talking to the people who come out to see the alpacas while I tell them about them. There are a couple of alpacas who don’t mind being touched but most of them will come up to eat out of your hand but they don’t want to be hugged or petted :P. I make sure they get to stoke the backs of those that allow it so they can see how soft the fiber is while I tell them how warm it is. The kids love coming out to see them, as as excited as they are I think the adults are just as excited. My son got a llama 1 1/2 years ago (she was 6 months old when I bought her) so people could see the difference as they would come and say look at all the llamas, and I’ll chuckle and tell them those are alpacas, llamas are much larger, now they can see the difference! Libby (short for her registered name Liberty Bell) has also turned out to be a good guardian for the alpacas as well :). I have her first fleece which is full of hay etc that I need to skirt and wash and comb with those medieval looking wool combs :P, so see how her fiber is and then spin it to see what kind of yarn I get. It’s very different from the alpacas we have.

    • Yeah, at my age there isn’t a ton of service I can do but knitting is something I can do and it’s helpful for those who live in the shelters to at least have a warm head. Wish I could do more but my finances are limited being on SS and no retirement, However Hobby Lobby has reasonable prices on their acrylic yarn as they have 30% off of their yarn every other week and I use the worsted weight so it’s warmer. I would spin wool for the hats but taking care of wool is a process they might not have access to or the desire to care for because if it felts they couldn’t wear it as it shrinks when it felts. But I get to choose pretty yarns to knit the hats because everyone likes nice things.

    • I hadn’t seen a skeleton rooster either. They had to get one in the next town over because the local store that sold them was out, haha, must be a thing this year.

The alpacas are good sports to wear them, but Libby the llama said no way!

  2. The alpacas are soo cute! I wonder if Libby the llama wanted something spookier, lol! The hats look great, I don’t know how you can knit without measurements–it’s a bit scary to me. 🙂
