Let There be Yarn!

Was at the farm today, my son and his spouse picked up so much yarn on Friday!! The first two pictures show all the beautiful yarn. The 2 pictures of roving (first picture is so you can see the roving clearly, the bottom picture is to show how much there is) is from a cria from last year named Laya, it is sooo soft. It was so soft the mill couldn’t spin it without it getting neps in it, so she processed it as roving and my son gave it to me, oh my all this soft fiber to spin!!! Her color is light enough that I can dye some of it if I want :).

It was Alpaca Farm Days today at my son’s and his spouse’s farm but I didn’t get to take any pictures, I was busy showing spinning for all the people who came to see the alpacas. The fiber I was spinning is some old stash cria that looks a lot like Laya’s fiber and just as soft :). It was a good day :).

      • I know we’d rather go to our reward, but if ya gotta stay and spin, I’m sure He’ll understand the delay πŸ˜‰

Are you like me where you spin the crap stuff first and save the good stuff for later??? I don’t know why I do that! BUT… I picked up some lovely yarn from Yarnmama yesterday and when I got home last night I IMMEDIATELY started knitting with it! Alas, I hate the pattern I picked, so I gotta find a new one now. But whatever, dig into your stash and then put it away! Spin something fresh!!

      • Most of the time I look through my older stash and say, oh my gosh I love that (lol that is why I originally bought it but some how have forgotten about it :P). All the roving he gave me from the cria is mine, not to spin for him, he thought I would just enjoy it, what a good son!!!

      • I have to agree with Knittingissofun…. I would totally buy Handspun by Mom…

Yesterday at the fiber festival, there were a ton of people spinning on these tiny portable wheels, you just treadle up and down with your toes. I’d not seen this type of wheel, have you?? Sure makes spinning a lot less cumbersome. I wonder if there is a fiber difference between the “real” wheels and the newer, smaller ones.

      • are you referring to the Spinsolutions Hopper travel wheel or the Joy spinning wheel (also portable) or the Schacht Ladybug travel wheel? google those to see if that is what you mean? They are actually expensive wheels that are just smaller so you can drag them along with you :P. They come from reputable wheel makers so tho they might have some limitations on art type yarn (maybe they don’t tho because I don’t have one) they spin just as lovely yarn as the larger wheels. They run about a $1,000 or more. If it’s not what you meant, if you have a name for a wheel so I can look it up :). I’d love to have a portable wheel (but not necessarily an electric. wheel which is very portable and spin worthy too). My favorite wheel is my larger Kromski Polonaise :), but it’s it’s not portable at all, to get it in my car I would have to disassemble it and, nope not gonna happen. πŸ˜›

      • I looked all of them up, they looked more like the Joy wheel. But the funny thing is, everyone had them, and I saw 2 vendors selling them, well, modified, maybe copied the real one? Because I could have sworn the price tags were $200-$400! Well, now I wish I had gotten a card or something to pass along to you! Maybe check with Yarnmama, she was there and might know the vendor(s)???

We did see a couple people using tiny electric wheels, too.

It was quite interesting, I’ll have to look for more festivals in my area!

      • I’d be very curious about those! I bought an electric wheel for my son (who has EDS) they are all small table top things. This one was about $350 because all but the motor and metal pieces it needs are 3D printed. It works well. The small spinning wheel like you saw are travel wheels because they are easy to transport. But most of those are quite expensive. I’d love to know the brand on that :).
