New Cria Named!

He has been named….Apollo. He weighed 11 lbs 2 ozs at birth (on the small size) but weighs 12 lbs and 8 ozs now, he’s growing like a weed!! We won’t know his permanent color until he’s sheared next spring, but he is a cutie!

All my son’s yarn, for knitters and crocheters, and roving, for spinners and needle felters, from the past two years of shearing (yeah, there will be quite a bit!) is being picked up this Friday from the fiber mill and should be in his shop on Saturday for Alpaca days at his farm.

    • I do too, but his mom is a no go, lol. She will eat food out of my hand but trills the whole time letting me know she’s not sure she really wants me there but then there is the treat food, lol. The “treat” food is actually their vitamins, but it’s like candy to them lol.

      • believe it or not most of the babies are pretty leery to be too close to us, must be an innate thing to keep them safe in the wild, not that ours are wild :P. Only cria that was really friendly was from last year (oh my her fiber is to die for), and she would let us pet her back without moving quickly away. We have a couple of adults that will let you pet them when they decide, but most are ok to come eat out of your hand but don’t touch me.

      • I find that weird. Aren’t they domesticated? I Mean they are completely reliant on your son to take care of them, and you’re there pretty frequently. I should think they would be human-forward.

        Shows you what I know!

I guess the reward for such great fiber is a hands-off policy!

      • They are naturally pretty shy animals unless you are hands on, training them to the halter, plus they all have their own personalities. They do come up to people so it’s not like they stay away but some of them just don’t like to be touched, except to eat out of your hand :P. My son and his spouse have full time jobs away from the farm to help pay for the farm costs along with the fiber and their farm store so they don’t have as much time with the alpacas as they would like, but some of them are attached to my son and his spouse. This mom is usually pet friendly, but she’s just protecting her cria :). I figure when the cria is older and the mom’s, Isabelle, hormones are settled down she will be back to her normal self :).
