Ok, some of this is a more than a month old and some is this month. If you click on the picture you are looking at it will enlarge. The first picture is a vertical swift my son made for me out of pvc pipe from some plans that I found online (maybe Ravelry). It was made, when finished, for a 4 yard skein around, but I only wanted a 2 yard skein so he cut it down a bit for me. Nice to have a great son who is willing and able to do stuff like this for me, I’m very grateful because he has a full time job and his farm to run, he could have said, I don’t have time, but he made it for me anyway, he is a sweetie!
The next two pictures are to show my progress on the Look for Happiness baby blanket I’m working on. I am loving this pattern, it’s such a pretty pattern, and it’s peaceful to make. I figure I am almost 1/2 way finished :). I took one up close so you could see the pattern a little better. I am still working on the fingerless mitts and will put a picture up when I get one finished and start the other one.
The next 3 pictures are at my son’s farm’s last Saturday with the public for the year (the Saturday before Christmas). He had to postpone from the week before because we had had an ice storm, I took the pictures before people started arriving. The first picture is Libby (the Llama) in a Christmas Top Hat, she was not impressed, hehe. The next 2 pictures are some of the female alpacas at the farm, 2 of them are wearing Christmas hats. They were ok with them. Libby is a bit more head strong, but that is a llama for you :P. They are all loving the cooler temperatures. There were cookies and hot chocolate for the visitors and my son’s mother in law made a wonderful chile con carne, for those of us working at the farm, for lunch, soooo good!!! She promised me the recipe.
Real cold weather is finally on the way, hello winter!

I always love pic of the alpacas! They are such interesting animals with their unique personalities! I hope you get to spend a a lot of winter time with them!

Hehe, in the winter I stay home, our winters can get brutal :P. He’ll open back up to the public in April sometime. 😉
He is an awesome kid, who will be 50 in February!!! yikes.

It must be so fun having alpacas and llama in the family. Your son did a great job with the swift. Sounds like a really fun day and I’m glad the alpacas will finally get to appreciate their warm coats now that winter is finally arriving. We had snow in November, record breaking high temps in December but I’ve woken to slushy snow. It can’t make its mind up at all here. Have a very happy 2025.

We’ve been up and down with temps too, but looks like by this week end, it’s really here :P. The alpaca and llama are fun, just wish they were as cuddly as they look :P.

Thanks! I agree who doesn’t like looking llamas and alpacas, a few of the herd will let you pet them, but most are a little skittish about being petted. But they will all come eat out of your hand!! There is one who use to stand beside you and let you pet her to your hearts content, but she’s expecting and a little cranky right now. My son says after the baby is born and couple of months old, she will be back to her I want some petting attitude :P. She was hand raised and bottle fed. This will be her 2nd baby, she is 7 years old.

How many llamas and alpacas does your son have? Does he raise them for their “wool”?

Yes he raises them for their fiber. He has 20 females (several are too old to breed but they are like pets to him so they will stay until they cross rainbow bridge) and 9 males, tho 2 of the males are neutered (they were aggressively fighting with the other males and he doesn’t want that very aggressive characteristic bred back into his herd) and 4 of the males are part of last years and this years cria (baby alpaca) so they between 4 & 1/2 months and 1 & 1/2 years old. I image he will trade the younger males to other alpaca breeders to keep his genetics diverse. He only has one llama, a female. He said he probably won’t breed her, he wanted to show people the difference between an alpaca and a llama. She gets along well with the female alpacas and is also a very good guardian to keep other animals out of the pastures, even at just 16 months old. She won’t even let the peafowl in the pasture, lol, good thing they are good flyers!!
